Over the last few weeks, FictionAlley staffers have been discussing creating radio plays, which would be available as a podcast and as downloadable files (and yes, we have another one in the works which we'll be announcing next week) so you could take a little bit of fanfic wherever you take your mp3 player. We hope to do one a month, and take submissions for the next ones, but first, we wanted to create a "beta version", so everyone could get comfortable with the process.
Sirius Black: English accent, deep voice. Posh if possible.
Remus Lupin & "Older" Remus Lupin: English accent, Yorkshire or Northern if possible. "Older" Remus should be hoarser and deeper.
Frank Longbottom: Any accent would be viable
Brenda Finnegan (mother of Seamus): Irish accent preferred.
Ram Patil (father of Padma and Parvati): English accent, Indian accent, or blend.
Sara Patil (mother of Padma and Parvati): English accent or Indian accent; should sound considerably different from Brenda.
Bill Weasley: English accent, working class if possible.
Lucius Malfoy: English accent, posh necessary.
Minerva McGonagall: Scots accent preferable.
Albus Dumbledore: English accent. Although Irish or Welsh would be intriguing.
Dobby: High and squeaky, British accent. Working class would be amusing.
Harry Potter: English accent, middle-class, middle-country if possible.
"Distant Voice" (only appears once): Preferably British accent of some sort.
To audition, call one of our two Skype phone numbers (+44 0161 408 3427 is the UK number and (303) 800-4342 is our US number) or, if you have a Skype account, "call" the FictionAlley account, and read either of the passages we've posted below, between now and noon US Eastern time on March 15, 2006. Make sure you also spell your FA username (if you have one) and your email address. Everyone will be contacted at the email address they provide, by March 20.
We're looking for acting ability, emotion and projection, as well as accent. Those who can fake accents, as well as women with low voices should definitely try out, since skill and emotion are more important than the gender of the actors.
To participate in the recording, you will need a microphone that allows you to record on your computer. We expect all actors to commit at least six hours to the project over at least two days. in March, and the date and time will be finalized when the actors are cast.
Here's the two audition pieces (please do not try to mimic Sean Biggerstaff's accent if you're not actually from Scotland):
"Bad news, Harry. I've just been to see Professor McGonagall about the Firebolt. She -- er -- got a bit shirty with me. Told me I'd got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about you staying alive. Just because I told her I didn't care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch first. Honestly, the way she was yelling at me... you'd think I'd said something terrible... then I asked her how much longer she was going to keep it. 'As long as necessary, Wood'... I reckon it's time you ordered a new broom, Harry. There's an order form at the back of Which Broomstick... you could get a Nimbus Two Thousand and One, like Malfoy's got."
"It's called a Time-Turner, and I got it from Professor McGonagall on our first day back. I've been using it all year to get to all my lessons. Professor McGonagall made me swear I wouldn't tell anyone. She had to write all sorts of letters to the Ministry of Magic so I could have one. She had to tell them that I was a model student, and that I'd never, ever use it for anything except my studies.... I've been turning it back so I could do hours over again, that's how I've been doing several lessons at once, see?"
ETA: Anyone with experience directing radio plays is asked to email me or comment asap, please. We're set for this one but would love to grow the team.
